Job Description

Our Hardware Development Team is recruiting for a Hardware Design Authority with RF Engineering experience to work on the development of professional mobile digital radio products.

Based in our Cambridge development centre and reporting to the Head of Electronics the applicant would have a hands-off involvement in the whole lifecycle of product development from concept and prototype stages, through to production and support.

As a Hardware Design Authority you will provide overall technical ownership for a development project to ensure a high quality, repeatable design that meets the agreed requirements. The right candidate will have a broad range of electronics engineering knowledge, experience of taking a leading role on engineering projects and be an excellent communicator.

Work scope:

Working as part of a dynamic project team and interfacing with the various other technical and non-technical disciplines, the responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing product requirements, creating technical specifications and defining product architectures
  • Execution of standard design processes: Definition, Design, Implementation, Verification and Release to Manufacture
  • Striving to deliver the most pragmatic design solutions to meet the product requirements
  • Interfacing to Project and Product Management – reporting progress, issues and successes
  • Risk and issue management, devising and implementing mitigations plans
  • Presentation of product design status during Project Phase Reviews
  • Defining and coordinating verification testing
  • Championing and improving upon development processes
  • Working with third-party suppliers to develop custom components and solutions
  • Coordinating the resolution of design and integration issues
  • Manufacturing requirements and test specification authoring
  • Hardware technical assistance to the customer support and sustaining manufacturing teams
  • Maintaining awareness of the competitive marketplace to ensure our product designs remain ahead of the competition

Job Requirements

Essential skills

The applicant should have skills and experience in most of the following areas:

  • A broad experience of electronics engineering, covering a number of areas such as:
    • Analogue electronics design
    • Power supply design
    • Digital electronics design
    • Audio product development
    • Embedded software development
    • Design for Safety, EMC and ESD conformance
  • A strong understanding of RF communication system principals
  • Self-starter with ability to demonstrate technical leadership within a product development environment
  • Experience of specifying technical requirements and taking a lead role in delivering against these requirements
  • Strong MS Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

Desirable skills

Ideally the applicant will have skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Discrete RF electronics design experience
  • Experience working with current narrowband technologies (TETRA, DMR, P25)
  • Experience working with current wideband technologies (Bluetooth, WiFi, LTE)
  • Intrinsically safe product design (e.g. ATEX)
  • Mechanical design experience
  • Software development experience
  • Design for medium volume product manufacture
  • Issue tracking systems (e.g. Jira)
  • Test management tools (e.g. Spiratest)
  • Formal PLM systems (e.g. Oracle Agile)
