Job Description

Sepura, part of the Hytera Group, a leading global supplier of critical communication radio systems, are expanding the Baseband Team and have a new vacancy for a Senior Acoustic Engineer to work on the development of professional mobile radio products and accessories.

Based in our Cambridge development centre, the applicant would be involved in the whole lifecycle of product development from concept and prototype stages, through to production and support.

As a Senior Engineer you will have technical responsibility for complete work package delivery. The right candidate will have a strong background in audio product development, enjoy problem solving and be a good communicator.

Work scope:

  • Technical design, specification and optimization of acoustic solutions for radio terminal products and accessories:
    - Acoustic design evaluation and test
    - Mechanical acoustic design consultation
    - Transducer selection and evaluation
    - Listening, measuring and optimising audio algorithms
    - Integration with other subsystems
    - Design and test documentation
  • Leadership of the Acoustic Engineering discipline
    - Mentoring of more junior team members
    - Coordination with key stakeholders to prioritise and schedule team tasks
    - Identification of skills gaps and proposal of internal and external training
    - Ownership of the acoustic test equipment and measurement methodology
    - Maintenance of the acoustic test standards documentation
  • Opportunity to support the DSP Team Leader in the development of Audio DSP code for radio terminals (depending on experience)
    - Improvement of the quality and coverage of current audio processing testing
    - Assist in the refinement of current DSP algorithms and development of new algorithms
  • Technical requirements analysis
  • Resolution of design and integration issues
  • Technical support to end customers
  • Progress reporting to project team and line manager

Job Requirements

Essential skills:

Ideally the applicant will have skills and experience in a number of the following areas:

  • Acoustic transducer selection for mobile telecoms
  • Audio subsystem architectural design
  • Practical experience of audio signal processing techniques (echo cancellation, noise reduction, etc.)
  • Experience of acoustic quality measurement techniques (e.g. PAMS, PESQ, HASQUE MOS)
  • Head and Torso Simulator (HATS) experience
  • MATLAB experience
  • Audio circuit design
  • Design for EMC compliance
  • Working to and testing against acoustic safety standards (e.g. ITU P.360)
  • An understanding of the consequences of high sealing requirements on acoustic performance
  • Experience working with radio products
  • Design for medium volume product manufacture

Additional skills:

The candidate may have additional skills and experience in developing Audio DSP code to implement signal processing algorithms. In this case the work scope may be expanded, as described above.
