Job Description

If you are an RF designer with a desire to work on world-leading radio products for critical communications, Sepura is interested in talking to you. We are expanding the RF Engineering team and have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer to work on the development of professional mobile radio products.

Based in our Cambridge development centre and reporting to the RF Team Leader, you would be involved in the whole lifecycle of product development from concept and prototype stages, through to production and support.

Job Requirements

As part of the RF team, you will have technical responsibility for designing, testing and delivering high performance radio subsystems across a range of products. Sepura’s products use a range of different RF protocols, including TETRA, LTE, Bluetooth and WiFi. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to other areas of electronics and further develop your skills as we expand our capabilities.

What you will be working on

On a typical project you will be:

  • Working with project managers and technical leads to define tasks and schedule and to report progress
  • Specifying and designing discrete RF solutions, from low-power receivers for battery-powered handhelds to 25W PAs for vehicle-based systems
  • Collaborating across disciplines to integrate the RF design into the radio product and to identify and solve integration issues
  • Working with manufacturing engineering to introduce products into production 
  • Supporting type approval activities
  • Providing technical support to end customers and subcontract manufacturers

Skills and Experience

The most important skills and experience for the role are:

  • Transmit chain design, including design of discrete PAs
  • Receive chain and synthesizer design
  • RF simulation tools (e.g. Microwave Office, ADS) for linear and non-linear simulation
  • Strong fundamental analogue electronics
  • Printed coupler design
  • At least 5 years of RF design experience

Desirable skills

Ideally you will also have experience in one or more of the following technology areas:

  • Cartesian loop transmitter design
  • Transmitter linearization techniques e.g. pre-distortion (analogue/digital)
  • Specific experience of designing for TETRA, LTE, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth
  • Antenna design
  • Design for ESD and EMC compliance
  • Power supply design (including SMPS)
  • Transmit converter specification (SNR, rates)
  • FIR filter design
  • MATLAB/Simulink
