Job Description

Sepura, part of the Hytera Group, a leading global supplier of critical communication radio systems, are expanding the RF Engineering team and have a vacancy for a Senior Engineer to work on the development of professional mobile radio products.

Based in our Cambridge development centre and reporting to the RF Team Leader the applicant would be involved in the whole lifecycle of product development from concept and prototype stages, through to production and support.

As a Senior Engineer, your focus will be to work on the complete TX subsystem, but will also get involved in other areas of electronics as required. Although the focus at present will be on TETRA development, as critical communications migrates to other technologies such as LTE so will the development role at Sepura.

The right candidate will have experience in the specification, design and test of transmitter subsytems, especially discrete PAs, will enjoy problem solving and be a good communicator.

Work scope:

  • Technical design and specification of discrete linear RF PA solutions in the 100MHz-1GHz range
    > High efficiency compact handheld battery based RF PAs ≤5W
    > Rugged Mobile RF PAs 10-25W
  • Technical requirements analysis
  • Complete transmitter chain specification, design and implementation
  • Integration of PA and transmitter into radio solution (software, mechanical, power supply)
  • PA ruggedness design
  • Component specification and sourcing
  • Block, subsystem and product integration testing
  • Resolution of design and integration issues
  • Type approval support
  • Support design, testing and troubleshooting in other areas of the product as appropriate
  • Progress reporting

Job Requirements

Essential skills:

The applicant should have skills and experience in most of the following areas

  • Discrete linear PA design
  • Transmitter chain design
  • RF design
  • Analogue design
  • Handset design
  • RF simulation tools (e.g. Microwave Office, ADS) for linear and non-linear simulation

Desirable skills:

Ideally, the applicant will have experience in one or more of the following technology areas

  • Printed coupler design
  • Portable product design
  • 3G/4G design
  • GPS/WiFi/Bluetooth design
  • VCO/synth design
  • Receiver design
  • Cartesian loop transmitter design
  • Transmitter linearization techniques e.g. pre-distortion (analogue/digital)
  • ADS simulation
  • CST Microwave Studio
  • Design for ESD protection
  • Design for EMC
  • Transmit converter specification (SNR, rates)

Personal attributes:

  • Communicates effectively with other across multiple disciplines
  • Works well in a small focussed team, sometimes against tight deadlines
  • Conscientious, reliable and enthusiastic worker who takes pride in their work
  • Self-driven and motivated with ability to use own initiative and take a technical lead
  • Ability to work to a high level of quality with good attention to detail


  • Minimum 6 years RF design experience
  • High volume product development
  • PA development for mobile and/or fixed site communication
