Job Description

The Sepura TETRA digital radio products are similar to mobile phones, but they also provide robust, long range, secure communication in harsh environments to public safety, military, transport, utilities and commercial customers. Sepura offer a broad range of radio products, support tools and accessories.

Reporting to the Device Driver Team Leader, the role will focus on the development of Embedded Linux Kernel, Linux Device Drivers and Linux development tools. The candidate will be responsible for optimising real-time open-source and proprietary Device Drivers, monitoring relevant community mailing lists and trialling Linux development tools.

The candidate will possess strong communication skills and will be comfortable discussing ideas and solutions with others in order to successfully design new components and resolve issues in legacy components. They will be able to apply initiative when required and will take ownership for achievement of their own activities. Previous Embedded Linux platform software development experience of a released commerical product is essential.

Job Requirements

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Embedded Linux kernel hacking and kernel configuration including modifications to the scheduler, performance optimisations and minimising latencies
  • Trialling and integrating open-source development tools for debugging, profiling, code-coverage, memory leak detection etc.
  • Maintenance and enhancements of the Linux build and distribution tools
  • Monitoring relevant Linux community mailing lists
  • Responsible for writing and maintaining device drivers and low-level software components
  • The production of architectural, design and test specifications
  • Integration testing, investigation and resolution of issues
  • Participation in project planning and technical reviews

Essential technical skills and experience:

  • Significant contribution to the platform development of a commercially released product using Embedded Linux
  • Experience in using and integrating open-source Linux development tools for debugging, profiling, code coverage, memory leak detection etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of the C programming language in real-time multi-processor, multi-threaded, event-driven software
  • Excellent debugging skills. Enjoys investigating and solving challenging real-time platform issues
  • Experience in the complete software development lifecycle
  • Familiar with Embedded Linux driver architecture, USB, networking, memory and scheduling subsystems. Experience of using ARM BSPs
  • Developing production quality real time embedded software for low level device drivers
  • Experience of using configuration management and fault tracking tools

Desirable technical skills and experience:

  • Experience with Linux open-source project configuration management and patching techniques
  • Experience with management and configuration of the Embedded Linux Kernel distribution using Yocto, OpenEmbedded, Buildroot etc.
  • Familiarity with working with a hardware development team (interpretation of schematics and a practical knowledge of debugging using logic analysers and oscilloscopes)
  • Experience of (automated) software testing at a component level
  • Experience with Android development in mobile platforms
