Job Description

Do you have experience and knowledge of product development life cycle, engineering and electronics? Sepura are hiring a Hardware Design Authority to provide technical ownership for development projects to ensure a high quality, repeatable design that meets the agreed requirements?

 Working as part of a dynamic project team and interfacing with the various other technical and non-technical disciplines, the responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing product requirements, creating technical specifications and defining product architectures
  • Execution of standard design processes: Definition, Design, Implementation, Verification and Release to Manufacture
  • Striving to deliver the most pragmatic design solutions to meet the product requirements
  • Interfacing to Project and Product Management - reporting progress, issues and successes
  • Technical risk and issue management, devising and implementing mitigations plans
  • Presentation of product design status during Project Phase Reviews
  • Defining and coordinating verification testing
  • Championing and improving product development processes
  • Working with third-party suppliers to develop custom components and solutions
  • Coordinating the resolution of design and integration issues
  • Manufacturing requirements and test specification authoring
  • Hardware technical assistance to the customer support and sustaining manufacturing teams
  • Maintaining aware of the competitive marketplace to ensure our product designs remain ahead of the competition

Sepura is part of a global organisation and hence occasional travel may be required. Additional duties may arise on a seasonal or ad hoc basis, or as the business requires

Job Requirements



The role suits someone with extensive and demonstrable electronics engineering and technical leadership experience. As a guide we would be looking for someone with >8 years electronic engineering experience preferably across a wide range of electronic/product design

1) Full Product Design Lifecycle

Experience should include technical ownership for full product development lifecycle

2) Different functional team

Experience should include technical supervision of engineers operating in different hardware domains with different toolsets and capabilities


1) Commercial awareness

Experience of working in a commercially focussed environment with an appreciation of using business cases to drive priorities

2) Decision making

Able to demonstrate examples of taking responsibility for making pragmatic technical decisions

3) Cultural awareness

Experience on multi-site / multi-cultural operation



1) Technical leadership

Technical leadership and interpersonal skills are essential including mentoring & coaching, motivation, technical arbitration and directing solutions

2) Process and tools

Thorough understanding of Hardware development processes and tools

3) Specifications and requirements

Experience of specifying technical requirements and taking a lead role in delivering against these requirements

4) Process and innovation

Flair for innovative design and a process orientated approach to product development

5) Technical skills

  • Electronic Architectural Design
  • Analogue electronics design
  • Power supply design
  • Digital electronics design
  • Audio product development
  • Appreciation of RF design
  • Embedded Software development
  • Design for Safety, EMC and ESD conformance

6) Communication

Proven ability to communicate in a variety of formats at all levels with an appreciation of target audience


1) Hardware Architecture

A good understanding of electronic systems and architectures ideally with experience of architecting solutions

2) Outsourcing and 3rd party management

Experienced in working with 3rd party suppliers from requirement creation through to component/product acceptance

3) Estimation

Experience of electronic design estimation (considering resourcing, task dependencies, tool requirements etc.)

4) Technical skills

  • Discrete RF electronics design experience
  • Experience working with current narrowband communications technologies (TETRA, DMR, P25)
  • Experience working with current wideband technologies (Bluetooth, WiFi, LTE)
  • Intrinsically safe product design (e.g. ATEX)
  • Mechanical design experience
  • Software development experience
  • Design for medium volume product manufacture

5) Process and tools

  • Issue tracking systems (e.g. Jira)
  • Test management tools (e.g. Spiratest)
  • Formal PLM systems (e.g. Oracle Agile)
  • Statistical analysis tools
  • SQL database queries



  • Most applicants for this role would have started their careers with a Bachelor university degree, in Electronic Engineering or another field of engineering/science


  • A Bachelor university degree, ideally in Electronic Engineering, although other formal academic qualifications would be considered based on experience
